2025 Graduation Information
May 2, 2025
Good evening Seniors and Families,
Seniors, thank you for a great Decision Day!.
Graduation tickets were distributed during the Decision Day ceremony yesterday morning. Each senior who has paid all of their dues and debts received their allotted 8 tickets in an envelope.
Please discuss with your family how many tickets you will need and for families who do not need all 8 tickets we are asking that you turn in any tickets that you do not need so we can re-distribute them to families that need more than 8 tickets. For example, if a student only needs 6 tickets please turn in the extra 2 tickets to Ms. Foley in the main office as soon as you are aware of how many tickets you do not need from your allotted 8 tickets. Children under the age of 5 years old do not need a ticket to attend graduation. Tickets will also not be replaced if they are lost or damaged so please keep them in a safe place.
For families that need to request additional tickets please fill out the google form Request for extra Graduation Tickets with your information and how many extra tickets you need no later than May 14 at 5:00 p.m. After we collect all of the tickets that families do not need, we will select based on a lottery selection in order to ensure everyone has the same opportunity to obtain more tickets. It will not be first come first serve so you do not need to rush to request more tickets. The lottery will close at 5:00 p.m. on May 14 and we will inform families who were selected by Monday May 19.
Please be mindful that a lot of families will request extra tickets so please be reasonable with your additional requests. We also cannot guarantee you will receive the extra tickets if more tickets are requested that we have available to give out so this is purely a lottery based request.
Families may also opt to keep their 8 tickets and share with friends on their own without turning them into the school, however if you do not know anyone who needs extra tickets and if you do not need all 8 we are asking that graduates inform us as soon as possible by turning their unused tickets into the main office.
Thank you for your patience and understanding as we want to ensure every graduate has family and friends in attendance.
Sincerely,
Joe Murgo

Counseling: May is Mental Health Month! We are encouraging students to "be kind to your mind" and reach out for help when they need it. There are many resources in the area, and 988 is the national Suicide and Crisis Hotline that is available 24/7. The week of May 12-16, Counseling will have activities daily for students during lunches, and we will be posting information on our Instagram account daily! Follow us @bphs_counseling to keep updated on information and upcoming activities.
Spring End of Course SOL exams for History, Science and Mathematics begin this week!
Most students who are in need of an SOL for their verified credits will test during the morning of
May 6 for History,
May 13 for Science
May 16 for Mathematics
Students need to pass one SOL in History, Science and Mathematics in order to meet graduation requirements. For most circumstances, after this passing SOL score a student will no longer participate in SOL assessments for that subject. The only two exceptions are for students who were enrolled in a high school level math class while in middle school, and Biology.
All students enrolled in Algebra, Geometry or Algebra 2 must take at least one Mathematics SOL in high school regardless of whether they passed a high school Mathematics SOL while in middle school. Additionally, all students enrolled in Biology must take the Biology SOL regardless of whether they passed Earth Science or Chemistry SOLs.
Students should bring a charged, school-issued Chromebook device with them on the day(s) of testing.
Learning Lab: Learning Lab is still available for students to receive additional help after school. Students can check in with any teacher to sign up for Tuesdays and/or Thursdays from 2:30-4:30.
Chromebook Collection: The school division is planning to refresh school-issued Chromebooks for the upcoming school year. To assist with this work, all students will be required to turn in their Chromebook and charger, along with other school-issued items like textbooks and library books.
A detailed communication will be shared once the collection process is finalized. I wanted to provide early notification that this will be a requirement, as it is new for this school year.
PTSO: “It's time to celebrate all that our teachers have done this year with a Cinco de Mayo luncheon on Monday! BPHS PTSO is asking for any help families can provide with food donations, volunteering, and/or gift cards — all in support of BPHS teachers, administrators, and staff. Please bring donations to the front office by 9:00 am on 5 May.”
Please use the link below to sign up: https://www.signupgenius.com/
Recognize and Respond: Opioids Free Seminar: One of our student leaders will be hosting a free seminar on the opioid crisis and the dangers of this drug. We are partnering with the Rappahannock Area Health Department and the Rappahannock Area Community Services Board to raise awareness, learn how to recognize and respond to an opioid overdose, and gain a deeper understanding of the issue.

Counseling: It's the last week to request a class change for next year! If your student would like to change a course request, they can access this Google Form. Please make sure that they use their SCPS email address to access the form. The hard deadline for course request changes is May 2, 2025, after which no course request changes will be honored, including over the summer and at the beginning of next school year. Course requests are a wishlist at this time, as the master schedule is constructed over the summer.
There will be very, very limited options to change classes in the fall. Requests for schedule changes in the fall may be considered in the following situations:
- Student’s schedule is missing required courses for diploma requirements or any specialized services;
- Student did not meet a course prerequisite;
- Student has previously earned credit for a course;
- Student is requesting a course level change; or
- Student is missing a course or if a course is listed twice.
We're excited to host Decision Day activities on May 1, next Thursday, for all of our seniors in celebration of their hard work and making post-secondary plans! Seniors will enjoy a Chik-fil-A breakfast, receive a certificate in recognition of making plans for next year, and be treated to cupcakes, a photo booth, outdoor games, music, fellowship, and more from 8am-10:30am. We're excited to celebrate the class of 2025!

Front Marquee Sign: I apologize that our marquee sign has not been working since December. Shortly before Winter Break a part was damaged and is in the process of being replaced. We hope to have our marquee sign back up and running shortly.
Notification of Lockdown Drill: We will be holding a lockdown drill next week. We will always make an announcement prior to the drill letting students know that the drill is about to begin. Additionally, we make an announcement to conclude the drill so that students can return to their normal activities.
During the drill, students will receive instructions from their teachers and then implement these instructions in their classrooms. We know that lockdown drills can be stressful for some students and we aim to alleviate as much stress as possible by clearly communicating about the drills with students and families.
Counseling News: Counselors will begin meeting with students individually on Tuesday, January 21 to review/confirm course requests. Please note that due to the amount of students we are required to meet with, these scheduling meetings are student-only; there will be additional opportunities to schedule meetings regarding course requests including caregivers after Spring Break.
Please see the following grade-level presentations detailing course sequencing to prepare for the Online Course Request (OCR) window, and discuss these options with your student. Each presentation includes sequence information for core classes, information about classes BPHS offers, access to the Program of Studies, and demo videos of how to access OCR.
If your student is interested in applying for a secondary program/pathway, the deadline for submitting an entry in the secondary application lottery is January 24. Please see this LINK for more information. Students are unable to choose those program/pathway courses in StudentVue during OCR -- if they are accepted into a program, their course requests will be changed to reflect the program/pathway in the spring.

- Always store the Chromebook in a safe place when not in use.

Motivational Guest Speaker Information: Next Friday January 24 we will have Duncan Kirkwood come do a motivational presentation to our Freshman and Senior classes in the Auditorium. We picked these two classes because Duncan's message resonates with students beginning high school as well as life after high school. Our SCA students saw Mr. Kirkwood spoke at one of their SCA conferences in the Fall and our students were so impressed with his message that they asked if he could speak to more students at BPHS.
Due to time constraints and space our Sophomores and Juniors will have the ability to also hear Mr. Kirkwood’s motivational message via live stream in their classrooms.
Plese review information and video clips on Duncan Kirkwood by going to his website at https://topyouthspeakers.com/
The first assembly will be 11:30 am - 12:30 pm (Seniors). Juniors will watch via live stream and the second will be 1 pm - 2 pm (Freshman) and sophomores will watch via live stream.

The window for requesting courses for school year 25-26 through StudentVue starts December 16 and ends February 28. Students will have several opportunities to log into StudentVue and request classes through their classes on January 13-17. Students are also available to request courses through StudentVue at home at their leisure while the window is open. Once students enter course requests through StudentVue, counselors will begin meeting individually with students to discuss these requests in January/February. Please note that due to the amount of students we are required to meet with, these scheduling meetings are student-only; there will be additional opportunities to schedule meetings regarding course requests including caregivers after Spring Break.

Dear Black-Hawk Families:
There is no school next Wednesday November 27 through Friday November 29 for Thanksgiving Break!
Please review the important information.
NROTC Inspection: I would like to share a big CONGRATULATIONS to Master Sergeant Reid, First Sergeant Polanco, and all of the NROTC students for not only receiving an excellent inspection review today, but also earning the designation of being a Distinguished Area Four Unit! Area four encompasses many surrounding school divisions as well as Stafford County.
The Distinguished Unit designation is awarded annually to schools whose NJROTC Program ranks in the top 30 percent of the programs in each NJROTC area. Competing units are ranked according to degree of excellence attained in administration, academic performance, military proficiency, and host school support.
Congratulations again, to Master Sergeant Reid, First Sergeant Polanco, and all of our NJROTC students.
Please check our Facebook page (Brooke Point High School) for pictures of today’s inspection as well as many other BP news and celebrations.

Winter sports competitions will be starting after Thanksgiving. You can purchase season tickets through the Gofan app. https://gofan.co/app/school/

Dear Black-Hawk Families:
There is lots of important information so please review all items in preparation for next week.
Athletics/Activities: Athletics: Winter Sports Try-outs begin November 12. Physicals are required to be turned in during normal school hours and should be turned in by Nov 7 for winter sports tryouts.
Attendance: As we enter the holiday season, we want to reinforce the importance of school attendance. Every year, absences spike in the weeks before and after winter break as families squeeze in a few more vacation days. Please help break that cycle by considering when your family is taking vacation time.
We know that just a few missed days here and there can add up to too much lost learning time and put your child behind in school. This is as true in kindergarten as it is in high school. We also know that attendance is a habit that children should learn early on if they’re going to succeed in school and eventually on the job. We recognize that holidays are an important time for reconnecting with families far away. But keep in mind the impact on your child’s education if they miss too much school— and the message you will be sending about the importance of attendance. Our teachers will be teaching, and our students will be learning, right up until holiday break season.
Please review the attached Compulsory Attendance Law previously sent so that your family is updated on any changes impacting attendance.

Please join us for the Financial Aid Night next Wednesday at BPHS from 6-7pm in the Library. We will discuss all types of financial aid for colleges, the FAFSA, and the process for securing different types of aid.
Upcoming Dates:

December 11: Discovery Night at BPHS, 5:30pm-8pm
Seniors and families: We will be hosting a Financial Aid Night on November 20 at 6pm in the BPHS library. Come join us to learn more about the ins and outs of financial aid, the FAFSA, and how to find scholarships.

Car Pick-up/drop-off: I would like to send another friendly reminder that all car riders must use the designated car rider pick-up/drop-off line. Please refer to the attached map if you need to review the location. BPHSCarRiderEntry 24-25
Please do not use the front parking lot areas to pick-up or drop-off students during the hours in the morning drop-off, between 7:00-7:30 and in the afternoon pick-up, between 2:00-2:15. We appreciate your attention to this matter. With construction of Elementary School #19 beginning this month it is vital for the safety of all to follow the designated traffic patterns during school hours, specifically during arrival and dismissal. These protocols are safety measures and decrease traffic congestion, especially with our student drivers and student crosswalk areas.
Counseling News: It's hard to believe, but we will begin sharing information soon about scheduling for the 25-26 school year. This short assessment will take about 20 minutes, and will give students valuable information about social/emotional competencies, including relationship skills, responsible decision-making, social awareness, self-management, and social-emotional behavior. This data provides insights into areas of growth the mental health team can provide interventions for, which helps support overall student wellbeing. Students will receive instructions for how to access the DESSA during 2Y on October 30 from their teachers, and will be able to review their results after taking the assessment (these results are also available to view at any point through the Google Waffle for students).

- Maintain a regular bedtime and morning routine.

- Encourage your child to stay active for at least 60 minutes a day.
Hygiene

We still have student parking spaces available. You need to have all past and current dues and debts paid and bring the appropriate paperwork (license, registration, parking pass application filled out and signed by a parent). This will be on a first come, first serve basis!
School Pictures:Picture day is coming! Student pictures will take place Monday, August 18 through Wednesday, August 20. Students will get their picture taken in their English 9, 10, and 11 classes. Seniors need to schedule senior portraits separately.

Schedule change requests are received only through the Google Form found at tinyurl.com/bphs2425. Errors will be prioritized; all other class changes will be prioritized after. Please note that specific teacher requests and timing requests will not be honored. Students should continue attending their original classes until communication is received from their school counselor. Thank you!

Good afternoon Black-Hawk Families/Students
Car Riders: We will continue to use our new route. Car riders please turn on to Spartan Drive and make a left into the access road between Stafford Middle and Brooke Point. We will have staff and signs directing traffic. This will reduce the number of cars on Courthouse Road and allow buses and other cars to get to their locations quicker.
For safety reasons we will not allow car riders to enter through the main entrance parking area. All car riders should enter through Spartan Drive. Staff will ask you politely to turn around and go through the access road at Stafford Middle if car riders attempt to enter the main entrances. We are using the main entrance areas for student drivers and faculty only during morning arrival and afternoon dismissal.
Please see the attached map with the new route for Car Riders that was shared yesterday as well.
Parking Areas: We have 3 main parking areas at BPHS; Senior Lot, Junior Lot, and Staff Lot. Our Junior parking available spots have been condensed due to the future construction of Elementary School 19.
Beginning tomorrow our safety and security team will begin stickering cars that are parked in these areas that do not have a parking permit. Due to limited parking we cannot accommodate students who did not purchase a pass because they are taking the spot away from someone who did purchase a parking permit. In addition, it is a school division policy.
We also had students park in our staff lot this morning and staff had to find another location to park. The staff parking lot is the first lot when you enter Black-Hawk Drive. Students may not park in the staff lot, that area is reserved for our faculty only.
I understand that our parking situation is an inconvenience for some students/families, however the next two years at BPHS we will be undergoing a lot of construction and we are accommodating students and families the best we can with the areas we have left.
Thank you for your time and attention to this matter. My main priority is students getting to school on time, but arriving safely and following SCPS policy on student parking which requires a parking permit.
Sincerely,
Joe Murgo

Personal Electronic/Communication Devices: Students should hand write their schedules prior to the first day of school as they will not be able to access their phones beginning at 7:30 until 2:00 p.m. each day. I recommend doing this Monday night as our counselors are still making adjustments to balance out class sizes and our fixing any conflicts. Please review the attached slides regarding SCPS new policy on personal electronics. The slides have pertinent information such as:
- What qualifies has a personal electronic device (it is not just cell phones)
- Permitted Exceptions

This one-sheeters promotes awareness of:

Dear Black-Hawk Families:
It’s almost time for the new school year! I hope everyone is enjoying their summer and relaxing with family and friends.
Last week the building completed phase 1 of the renovated HVAC system construction. Phase 2 will occur next summer. Due to the construction we have been without air conditioning since the beginning of the summer. This has caused the building to be closed on excessive heat days as well as put us behind where we normally would be for building readiness. Now that we have cool air the next two weeks Central Office will be working closely with administration in getting the building ready for staff and students! Thank you all for your patience and understanding this summer when we have had to close the Front Office due to excessive heat.
I currently do not have any updated information on the construction on Elementary School #19. We are hoping to receive some guidance this week on our parking lots.
I am excited to begin the 2024-25 school year! Please review the following updated important information. See everyone soon!
Parking Passes: Parking passes for seniors and travel students only can be purchased Thursday, July 25 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the front office. There will be additional opportunities to purchase parking passes if these dates and times do not work.
Due to construction of Elementary School #19, we are re-assessing how many junior parking spots will be available. Once that is determined we will share information on how to purchase parking passes for juniors. Please note, there will be limited student parking for juniors this school year due to the construction of Elementary School #19. We hope to have this information by the end of the week.
Class Schedules: Student schedules tentatively go live in StudentVUE and ParentVUE on Monday July 29. More detailed information will be shared once it is finalized.
Open House: Tuesday, August 6 is our Open House Night. This is an opportunity to come meet staff, find your classes, learn about our various sports and clubs, and do a self-guided building tour.
